The used straw goes to the penguin's nest! ?
HAKATA EXCEL HOTEL TOKYU Participated in the grass straw reuse project for a recycling-oriented society
HAKATA EXCEL HOTEL TOKYU (Nakasu, Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City, General Manager: Kenji Ikeda) is pleased to announce that it has participated in the "Grass Straw Reuse Project" conducted by OREC green lab Fukuoka, and has introduced "grass straws" derived entirely from nature to replace plastic straws at the hotel's restaurant "Charcoal Grilled Zelkova" from April 2026.
The grass straws are made from pesticide-free grass and are a natural product used in the hotel restaurant when serving iced drinks.
After use, the straws are collected, sterilized with boiling water and dried, and then provided to Fukuoka City Zoo, where they are reused as nesting material in the penguin enclosure.
Grass straws are similar in shape to "yoshizu," which have been used as nesting material for penguins, and are considered suitable as nesting material because they have a moderate hardness and breathability.
By participating in this project, we will not discard resources after a single use, but instead connect them to their next role, promoting efforts toward a circular economy in line with the principles of the SDGs.
