From the quintessential Shibuya to its core and deepest depths—Masaru's grand adventure begins!
THE TOKYO TOILET Hakkei
This is 8 out of 17 THE TOKYO TOILET spots
I've never seen a toilet like this!
The diverse Shibuya is home to a variety of unique toilets you've never seen before.
Masaru explores 8 of the 17 toilets!
1: Nanago-Dori Park Public Toilet
"Hi Toilet" is designed to address the feeling of "it's dirty" and "I don't want to touch anything."
A cutting-edge "hands-free toilet" has been created, where users can use their voice to perform the actions required to use the toilet, such as "open the door" and "flush the toilet."
2-53-5 Hatagaya, Shibuya-ku
Design: Kazu Sato
2. Nishisando Public Toilet
The design was inspired by the "fountain square" in the middle of a European city where people gather, and a single vessel for everyone.
The faucet can be used from inside the toilet or from the sidewalk, and is designed so that everyone, from children to tall adults, can choose the location that suits them best.
3-27-1 Yoyogi, Shibuya-ku
Design: Sou Fujimoto
3: Yoyogi-Hachiman Public Toilet
Yoyogi Hachiman public toilets are based on the concept of "Three Mushrooms."
The aim was to create a public toilet that was bright, easy to use, and safe for women in particular to use at night, so the toilets were divided into three separate areas with no dead ends.
5-1-2 Yoyogi, Shibuya-ku
Design: Toyo Ito
4:Haru-no-Ogawa Community Park Public Toilet
The "Transparent Toilet" was created as a design that solves two concerns when entering a public restroom: whether it's clean and whether there's anyone hiding inside. The exterior walls are made of "instant dimming glass," which changes from transparent to opaque when a user enters and locks the door. At night, the entire facility lights up the park like a lantern, providing a comforting respite on dark streets.
5-68-1 Yoyogi, Shibuya-ku
Design: Shigeru Ban
5. Urassando Public Toilet
What a striking, unique blue-green color.
It's warm and somehow nostalgic, yet unique, giving you a sense of security as if you're being enveloped in something.
The unique roof is a reference to the traditional Japanese mino-ko roof, which also gives it a sense of peace.
4-28-1 Sendagaya, Shibuya-ku
Design: Marc Newson
6. Jingumae Public Toilet
A nostalgic yet new single-story house nestled in the gaps of the city.
The Jingumae public toilets were designed with Washington Heights' Dependent Houses in mind.
1-3-14 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku
Design: NIGO®
7: Jingu-Dori Park Public Toilet
This design was designed to be beautiful and clean, with well-ventilated toilets, a breeze flowing through, bright and safe.
The large overhanging eaves of the roof allow people to take shelter under the eaves when it rains.
It is our hope that this place will be loved by everyone as a place they can turn to when they are in trouble.
Shibuya-ku, Jingumae 6-22-8
Design: Tadao Ando
8: Nabeshima Shoto Park Public Toilet
The Nabeshima Shoto Park Toilet was designed with the image of a "village of public toilets" in mind, with the desire to create a public toilet that blends into the deep, forest-like greenery of this park.
The decorations are made from recycled wood and scraps from sawing, and are imbued with the desire to spread Japan's wood culture to the world.
2-10-7 Shoto, Shibuya-ku
Design: Kengo Kuma
