An old man who sweeps the gardens of Emperor Tenji's palace becomes consumed with love after seeing the Empress Dowager at a banquet. He hears the Empress Dowager say that if the sound of her beating a drum hung on a branch of a Katsura tree by the pond reaches the palace, she will show herself to him again. However, the old man finds that the silk-covered drum cannot be played, and lamenting his unfulfilled wish, he throws himself into the pond. The Empress Dowager, who comes to the pond to comfort the old man's obsession, immediately goes mad, and the old man's vengeful spirit appears and torments her, making her realize the consequences of her actions. The vengeful spirit then transforms into a demon and sinks once again into the depths of the pond.
