This year's annual Shigeyama Kyogen Kai will be themed around "food." Since the birth of Kyogen in the Muromachi period, there have been many plays that use food as a theme. The characters include people who make a living from food, a monk and a chef, and even the lovelorn waka poet Ariwara no Narihira, who stops by a teahouse hungry. No matter our positions, we are reminded that food is both a necessity and a joy for us humans. How many rice cakes will you eat this New Year? Enjoy the world of Kyogen, filled with delicious food and humor. The three plays are "Sugin," "Sohachi," and "Narihira Mochi."
